Teaching jewellery making as part of your jewellery business

Episode 33

Interested in teaching jewellery making as part of your jewellery business? Find out how from Jessica Rose, founder of the London Jewellery School

Welcome to Episode 33 of the Jewellers Academy Video Podcast! It is wonderful to have you here.

Whatever business you are in, it is a good idea to have multiple streams of income so jewellery business is no exception!

Teaching is a great way to build stability into your income structure, to connect with others and to pass on some of the knowledge you have gained.

But how do you get started and what do you need to think about?

I founded the London Jewellery School over 10 years ago and am lucky to say that over 25,000 students have come through our doors in that time. Having taught jewellery all my working life I can highly recommend it as an option for some jewellers.

Here are some of my top tips (watch the video for more detail)

Top tips:

  • Have a lesson plan

  • Under promise and over deliver - be realistic about how much people can learn but have some extra projects ready in case you need them

  • Test teaching on your friends and family first to check your timings

  • Be supportive and patient with your students

  • Know your subject inside out

  • Don’t be afraid to say you don’t know something

  • Be confident

  • Mistakes are part of learning

  • Insurance - check yours covers teaching

  • A teaching qualification isn’t necessary to teach jewellery making but if you want to get more confident research teacher training in your area

  • Preparation is key - make sure your materials are ordered in good time

  • Promote your classes on social media, website, press, word of mouth etc

  • Teaching children - check your insurance, you’ll need a DBS/CRB check (for the UK, check if you need any checks for working with children where you are), consider the age group and their motor skills and plan what you’ll teach accordingly

Good luck! Teaching is rewarding and a great addition to your jewellery business so give it a try!
