Why Choose a Jewellery Diploma Instead of Standalone Jewellery Courses?
When you first start learning jewellery making, it can feel like there are endless options.
You could watch YouTube videos. Book a day workshop. Join an online class. Buy a project course. Learn one technique at a time.
And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, in fact, many of our Diploma students started exactly there.
But at some point, many jewellers realise they want something different. They don’t just want to make one project - they want to understand what they’re doing. They want to improve faster. They want to stop starting things and actually finish them. They want to feel more confident and create jewellery they never thought they’d be able to make.
That’s often where a Diploma becomes a very different experience.
Accountability
One of the biggest differences is accountability.
Learning independently sounds appealing in theory. We imagine finding the time, staying motivated and steadily progressing through the projects. But life gets busy. Weeks pass. Then months. Before long, that online course is sitting in your account waiting for “when things calm down”.
Completion rates for many self-study online courses are thought to sit somewhere between 5–15%.
Most online courses are designed to be consumed - our Diploma programmes are designed to be completed. That’s why our completion rate is closer to 77%.
With weekly releases, assessments, mentoring, deadlines and support built into the structure, students keep moving forwards. It’s not about pressure. It’s about momentum. And momentum changes everything.
tools and materials help
Another thing students often tell us is that getting started feels overwhelming because of tools and materials.
What torch do I need?
What should I buy first?
What if I spend money on the wrong thing?
For several of our Diploma programmes, we’ve taken that uncertainty away by offering carefully selected tool and material kits. Tool and/or materials kits are available for the Diplomas in Silver Jewellery, Silver Metal Clay and Wax Jewellery, with materials kits available for the Diploma in Fine Jewellery.
Students can also include these within the 12-month payment plan and spread the cost. For many people this removes one of the biggest barriers to starting.
structured learning
Another huge difference is the way the learning itself is structured. Our Diplomas are not collections of projects. Every project is there for a reason.
Skills are introduced gradually and each project builds on the last. Techniques are repeated and layered so confidence develops alongside technical ability. Rather than jumping into something too advanced too quickly or staying comfortable for too long, students progress in a way that feels challenging but achievable.
This kind of structured learning means you don’t just make jewellery. You become a better jeweller.
community
Community is another thing that students often don’t realise they need until they experience it. Jewellery making can be surprisingly solitary. Many of us work at kitchen tables, spare rooms or home studios and spend long periods making alone.
Our Diplomas are run as cohort programmes, so there are other jewellers learning alongside you. Throughout the year students connect in tutor groups, meet regularly on Zoom and share questions, challenges and wins inside a dedicated Facebook community.
Time and time again students tell us they came for the jewellery training but stayed for the people.
learn from many experts
Another benefit of the Diploma model is learning from multiple expert tutors. Every jeweller works slightly differently. Every tutor brings different techniques, shortcuts, approaches and ways of solving problems.
By learning from a range of experienced jewellers, students develop a broader understanding of the craft and often discover techniques and ways of working they never would have found on their own.
it’s not just the making
And for those who dream of doing more with their jewellery, it’s not only about making.
Our Diploma in Silver Jewellery includes additional learning around jewellery design, photography, pricing and charging for commissions. Students also have the option to develop and receive support on a business plan if that’s something they want to explore.
you are supported
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, there is support. Every Diploma student receives six one-to-one mentoring sessions with an expert jeweller. You are not expected to figure everything out alone. You have someone in your corner to answer questions, encourage you, help troubleshoot and keep you progressing.
The course has been designed carefully and intentionally for your success.
A standalone jewellery course can be a wonderful place to begin.
But if you’re looking for structure, accountability, support and a year of focused progress, a Diploma can offer something very different.
Because the question isn’t only what you’ll make - it’s what might become possible if you gave yourself permission to learn properly.
