THE GOLDSMITH SERIES

The Challenges

Michael will guide you through 14 practical bench challenges inspired by the types of exercises traditionally used to develop apprentice goldsmiths.

These challenges are designed to build technical ability, problem solving and confidence at the bench through practical application rather than simply following projects.

Rooted in real workshop practice, they reflect the kinds of skills professional goldsmiths use every day.

1. Eternity band

Discover one of the classic details that experienced goldsmiths use to elevate stone setting.

Michael shares his technique for creating shaped back holes using a jeweller’s saw: developing precision, control and an understanding of the small details that make a piece feel professionally finished.

2. Fused Gold Wedding Ring

Learn a classic goldsmithing technique for creating a gold wedding ring without a solder join.

Because solder does not always perfectly match the metal being used, Michael demonstrates how to fuse the band together: building confidence working with gold and understanding techniques that contribute to a cleaner, more refined finish.

3. Tube Making

Move beyond buying components and learn to create your own 2mm and 3mm tube from sheet silver.

Michael demonstrates a classic goldsmithing technique using a swage block and drawplate: helping you build practical bench skills and giving you more flexibility in how you create settings and decorative details.

4. Repairing Chain

Chains can be one of the more challenging repairs to approach, particularly when working with layered construction and hollow components.

Learn how Michael assesses, plans and carries out this type of repair: building confidence and developing the professional thinking that helps experienced goldsmiths approach complex work.

5. Melting scrap gold

Learn one of the essential skills of traditional goldsmithing: transforming scrap gold into usable material.

Michael demonstrates a simple but effective technique for melting gold onto a charcoal block to create wire: helping you build confidence working with precious metals and understand how experienced goldsmiths make the most of every gram.

6. Silver Twist Ring

Combine traditional techniques to create a beautifully uniform fused twist ring from three silver wires.

Through this project, Michael will guide you through fusing and twisting wire: developing greater control, precision and confidence combining techniques to create more decorative and technically refined work.

7. Re-sizing aN Engagement ring

Explore one of the classic repairs every goldsmith will encounter.

When a client brings you an engagement ring set with diamonds and softer, coloured stones, how do you approach resizing safely and professionally?

Michael shares his method for assessing and carrying out this type of repair: developing confidence, technical judgement and a more considered approach to working on valuable pieces.

8. 1960s Bracelet Making

Explore Michael’s approach to using model making to develop intricate bracelet designs inspired by the elegance and structure of the 1960s.

Learn how experienced goldsmiths think through proportion, construction and design before moving to the bench.

9. How to make a tap up shank

Learn a traditional goldsmithing technique for creating your own knife-edge or shaped ring shank from scrap metal.

Michael demonstrates how experienced goldsmiths transform raw material into precise, wearable forms: building confidence, improving bench control and giving you greater flexibility when creating settings and custom designs.

10. Art Deco Collet Making (Advanced)

Take a standard round collet and transform it into something more refined and distinctive.

Michael guides you through carving and piercing decorative details before creating and attaching a base collet to complete the setting. This advanced technique develops precision, patience and an understanding of how experienced goldsmiths elevate functional settings into beautiful design features.

11. Gold ingot melting

Learn how experienced goldsmiths transform scrap metal into new possibilities.

Michael guides you through the process of melting and recycling gold into usable wire and sheet: developing confidence working with precious metals and understanding how to make the most of valuable materials.

12. How to get a stone out of a setting (Rub over)

Learn a practical repair technique that helps you approach stone setting work with greater confidence.

Michael demonstrates how to safely remove a stone from a rub over setting and, where needed, replace and reset it afterwards: developing precision, patience and a more considered approach to repair work.

13. Claw Setting repairs

Develop confidence working on stone-set jewellery through one of the most valuable repair techniques for a goldsmith.

Michael shares his approach to removing stones, repairing claw settings and preparing pieces for resetting: helping you build precision and trust your decisions at the bench.

14. Michael’s Signature Butterfly Earring Backs

Learn how to create elegant and refined butterfly backs for your fine jewellery pieces.

Michael shares his signature approach to creating this small but important component: developing precision, attention to detail and an understanding of how thoughtful finishing elevates jewellery.

Meet Michael

Master Goldsmith Michael S. Lynton has been crafting bespoke jewellery for leading jewellery houses and designers since 1964.

With a special focus on antique recreation, restoration and repair, Michael has built a reputation as a trusted and highly respected figure in London’s iconic jewellery district, Hatton Garden.

From Art Deco engagement rings to contemporary Art Nouveau-inspired pieces, his work spans decades of design movements and technical mastery.

With over 60 years at the bench, Michael brings an extraordinary depth of knowledge, an exceptional understanding of twentieth-century jewellery and a practical approach shaped by thousands of hours of making, restoring and problem solving.

Now, for the first time, Michael is opening up the techniques, processes and bench practices that have defined his career through The Goldsmith Series.

A Glimpse Into Michael’s Work

For more than 60 years, Michael has created, restored and repaired jewellery for private clients, collectors and leading jewellery houses.

The pieces below are examples of Michael’s work and are shared to give you a sense of the craftsmanship, technical skill and breadth of experience that inform The Goldsmith Series.

This programme does not teach you to recreate these exact pieces. Instead, you’ll learn the professional techniques, approaches and bench thinking that sit behind work like this.

Learn the techniques you only usually pick up at the bench

For generations, jewellers learned through apprenticeships. Learning through observation, repetition and years spent alongside experienced makers.

Those small adjustments. The efficient workflows. Watching first hand the decision making from a master goldsmith that turn a good repair into an invisible one or a good piece into an exceptional one.

In The Goldsmith Series, Michael shares the techniques, professional habits and practical thinking that come from more than six decades of making, repairing and refining jewellery.

This is not about following projects step by step. It is about developing the judgement, confidence and technical understanding that help you work more like a professional goldsmith.

Learn From Decades at the Bench

Some jewellery skills are easy to find online.

Others are usually learned over years of observation, experimentation and time spent alongside experienced makers.

In The Goldsmith Series, Michael opens up the practical thinking, professional shortcuts and bench techniques that have shaped more than 60 years of working as a Goldsmith.

Here are some of the areas you’ll explore:

Removing stones safely during repairs

Learn how experienced goldsmiths approach repair work thoughtfully and minimise unnecessary risk when working on existing jewellery.

Michael’s approach to invisible repair work

Discover the details that help repairs look considered, professional and sympathetic to the original piece.

Creating rather than buying

Explore techniques such as making tube from sheet and adapting components at the bench rather than relying on ready-made findings.

Working economically with precious metals

Understand ways to think about material use, efficiency and getting the most from precious metals.

Professional bench habits and workflow

See how experienced goldsmiths organise their work, sequence processes and make decisions that improve both quality and efficiency.

Repair thinking rather than project following

Develop confidence assessing challenges and understanding how to approach unfamiliar work.

What to do when things don’t go to plan

Learn how experienced jewellers troubleshoot, adapt and make decisions at the bench.

Techniques developed over decades

Benefit from practical insights, observations and methods refined through a lifetime of making, repairing and problem solving.

This is not about copying someone else’s process.

It’s about understanding how an experienced goldsmith thinks so you can develop your own judgement and confidence at the bench.

Where This Training Could Take You

By the end of the programme you will have stronger technical foundations, more confidence approaching repairs and working in gold, and a deeper understanding of the professional bench practices that transform how experienced jewellers work.

Tools & Materials

Because The Goldsmith Series is designed for intermediate jewellers rather than complete beginners, most students will already have many of the tools needed.

This programme works a little differently from our usual project-based courses. Much of Michael’s teaching is based around repairs, bench techniques and working with existing jewellery, rather than creating set projects with fixed materials lists.

We recommend watching through the programme first and deciding which techniques and projects you would like to try before purchasing anything additional. You’ll have lifetime access to the course, so there is no pressure to complete everything at once or have every tool from the beginning.

The main larger tools that may be useful include:

A torch
Propane, or a combined oxygen and propane torch.

A rolling mill (for working with scrap metal)
A rolling mill is helpful for some techniques involving scrap and reworking metal, but it is not essential to complete the programme and you can still gain a huge amount from the course without one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What level is The Goldsmith Series suitable for?

The Goldsmith Series is designed for jewellers with existing jewellery-making experience and is suitable for intermediate level and above.

As a guide, this programme is aimed at students who have completed our Year 1 Diploma in Silver Jewellery or who have equivalent experience and confidence at the bench.

This is not a beginner course and we recommend that you are already comfortable with core jewellery-making techniques before joining.

Is this an apprenticeship?

No. The Goldsmith Series is an online training programme designed to give you access to professional techniques, bench practice and insight from Master Goldsmith Michael Lynton. While inspired by traditional ways of learning alongside experienced makers, it is not a formal apprenticeship qualification.

Do I need to work in gold to take this course?

No. While some demonstrations involve gold and professional repair techniques, many of the principles and skills can be applied more broadly. You can watch the training first and decide which techniques you would like to explore.

Do I need to buy all of the tools and materials before I start?

No. Most jewellers this programme is designed for will already have many of the tools they need.

Because this training focuses on techniques, repairs and bench practice rather than fixed projects, we recommend watching through the programme first and then deciding whether there are any additional tools or materials you would like to invest in.

Do I need a rolling mill?

No.

However, a rolling mill is useful for some sections involving scrap metal and reworking metal, but you can still complete and benefit from much of the programme without one.

What type of torch do I need?

For some demonstrations, Michael uses a propane torch or a combined oxygen and propane torch but this is not necessary for all projects.

How long do I have access to the programme?

You will receive lifetime access to the training materials so you can revisit the lessons and work through techniques in your own time.

How does the support work?

Alongside the self-paced training, there will be a staffed private Facebook group running from 6 July to 31 August 2026.

A member of the Jewellers Academy team will be active in the group to answer questions and support your learning. You will also benefit from being a part of a community of intermediate to advanced level jewellers supporting each other.

There will be live Zoom Q&As with Michael during the above time for you to ask your questions.

Will Michael be available to answer questions?

Yes. During the support period there will be live Zoom Q&A sessions with Michael where you can ask questions and learn directly from his experience.

What if I can’t attend the live Q&A sessions?

No problem. All live sessions will be recorded and available to watch afterwards. You will also be able to submit questions in advance.

How much time should I set aside each week?

Because the programme is self-paced, this will vary depending on how deeply you want to engage. We recommend setting aside regular bench time during the support period to help maintain momentum.

Will I receive a certificate?

Yes. You will have the opportunity to achieve a Goldsmith Series certificate on completion.

To receive certification, you will need to submit photographic evidence of the work you complete during the programme. This allows us to confirm that you have engaged with and applied the techniques taught.

Full guidance on the certification process, including what to submit and how to upload your evidence, will be provided inside the programme area.

Certification is optional: you are welcome to work through and enjoy the training without submitting work if you prefer.

Can I join from outside the UK?

Absolutely. The programme is delivered online and is open internationally.
