When you're learning to make jewellery, you expect to need some help along the way. You take courses, practise new techniques, ask questions and learn from people who have more experience than you. But when it comes to running a jewellery business, it's surprisingly common to feel that you should somehow know what to do!

The truth is, nobody is born knowing how to run a business. There is so much to learn, from pricing and marketing to finding customers, managing your finances and deciding how you want your business to grow. Having someone experienced to talk things through with can make a huge difference.

In this week's Jewellers Academy podcast, Jess is joined by Anna Campbell to explore the benefits of business mentoring for jewellers. They share their own experiences of being mentored, what makes a great mentoring relationship and why having someone in your corner can help you move forward with greater clarity and confidence.

We're also sharing some exciting news about a new business mentoring opportunity at Jewellers Academy!

Why is business mentoring so valuable?

Running your own jewellery business can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also feel quite lonely at times. Many jewellers work independently, making all the decisions themselves and trying to work out the best way forward.

Sometimes you can spend weeks thinking about a decision, researching different options and going around in circles without feeling any closer to an answer.

This is where having a business mentor can be so helpful.

A good mentor brings knowledge and experience, but they also ask questions that help you think differently about your business. They're someone you can share your ideas with, discuss your challenges and get honest, constructive feedback from.

As Anna shares in the episode, sometimes the most valuable part of mentoring is having someone confirm that you're already on the right track. At other times, a mentor might suggest something you'd never considered before.

Both can help you make decisions and move forward.

Seeing your jewellery business from a fresh perspective

When you're working in your business every day, it can be difficult to see the bigger picture. You're busy making jewellery, updating your website, creating social media content, answering customer enquiries and keeping everything running.

It's easy to become so focused on what needs doing today that you don't have much time to think about where you want your business to go in the future.

Business mentoring gives you an opportunity to step away from the day-to-day tasks and look at things from a different perspective.

Jess shares that jewellers sometimes arrive at mentoring sessions wanting help with one particular problem, only to discover that something else needs their attention first.

For example, you might think you need to grow your Instagram following to increase sales. But once you start discussing your ideal customer and where they shop, you might discover that Instagram isn't actually the best place to focus your energy.

A mentoring conversation can help you get clearer on what you're trying to achieve and find a practical way to get there.

It's also a chance to explore what you really want from your jewellery business. Perhaps you'd like to turn your creative passion into your main income, develop a wholesale business or build something that fits comfortably around the other commitments in your life.

There are so many different ways to run a successful jewellery business, and your mentor can help you work towards the one that's right for you.

Building confidence and keeping yourself accountable

One of the lovely things about mentoring is having someone recognise the progress you're making.

When you're working hard to build a business, it's easy to focus on everything you haven't achieved yet. You might be disappointed that sales aren't growing as quickly as you'd hoped or feel frustrated that there's always something else to learn.

An experienced mentor can help you recognise what's working well, celebrate your achievements and identify the next areas to focus on.

They can also provide reassurance during the more difficult stages of building a jewellery business. It takes time to develop a customer base, establish your brand and build consistent sales, and having someone who understands that journey can be incredibly encouraging.

Then there's accountability!

We all know how easy it is to have a brilliant idea, feel excited about putting it into action and then get distracted by all the other things that need doing.

Having regular mentoring sessions gives you an opportunity to set goals, take action and check in on your progress. Your mentor can help you work through challenges and adjust your plans as your business develops.

As Anna explains in the podcast, the real value of mentoring isn't just what happens during the sessions. It's what you do with that support and advice afterwards.

Why jewellery industry experience matters

There are lots of wonderful business mentors out there, but there's something particularly valuable about working with someone who understands the jewellery industry.

Running a handmade jewellery business comes with some very specific challenges and opportunities. You might need help deciding which craft fairs are worth attending, approaching galleries, improving your jewellery photography or working out how to market a new collection.

Having a mentor who understands these things means you can receive practical, relevant advice for your business.

They may also spot potential problems before they become costly mistakes or introduce you to useful contacts and opportunities within the jewellery industry.

At Jewellers Academy, we're fortunate to have a wonderful team with experience across different areas of the jewellery business, including marketing, photography, selling at events, wholesale and business development.

It's this combination of practical experience, encouragement and personal support that makes mentoring so valuable.

Introducing our new Jewellery Business Academy mentoring programme

We're really excited to be introducing a new opportunity for jewellers who would love more personalised support with their businesses.

Our Jewellery Business Academy is a year-long programme designed to help you build and grow your jewellery business, with structured training, practical resources and support throughout the year.

One of the highlights of the programme has always been the individual mentoring session included for students. We've received such wonderful feedback about how much people have gained from these sessions that we wanted to find a way to offer more of this support.

For 2027, we're introducing an optional year-long business mentoring package, giving you six individual 45-minute mentoring sessions across the year.

You'll be matched with a mentor based on your business, your goals and the areas where you'd most like support.

With a session approximately every two months, you'll have time to work on your goals, put ideas into practice and then come back together to review your progress and decide on your next steps.

The mentoring package is available to jewellers who have previously completed the Jewellery Business Academy, as well as those joining the programme for 2027.

We're really looking forward to seeing what our students achieve with this extra support!
