stone setting: Collet setting

I am excited to introduce our newly filmed online stone setting course - Collet Setting.

And right now, get 50% off in our Early Bird Sale.

What is collet setting?

A collet is a sleeve or band of metal. In this style of gemstone setting, you are shaping and creating your own unique collet setting from metal to fit your stone.

In this professionally filmed online course, your tutor Jane takes you through step by step making a round stone collet set ring (see photo, left).

This is such a versatile setting that, once mastered, can be used in so many different ways including for rings, pendants, charms etc. If you have ambitions to develop your stone setting skills further, this is a great step along the way.

What you will learn on this course:

  • How to create and shape a collet setting for a round stone

  • How to solder the setting into a ring shank

  • How to create a seat for your gemstone

  • How to set your gemstone

  • How to polish your ring

(And if you have heard that collet setting includes complex equations and maths, the way Jane teaches this does not require any of these calculations! Phew).

Who will you learn from?

Meet your tutor Jane Taylor

Jane specialises in bespoke handmade jewellery, working with client commissions and one off pieces with beautiful gemstones. She ran her own shop Taylormade, in Godalming High Street for nearly 20 years and has since moved to a studio in Surrey, creating her pieces and teaching in person classes. Her work is available from the Jewelled Boutique in Hambledon as well as online. Jane is a mentor on our Fine Diploma course and is also one of the tutors at Jewellers Academy Brighton.

QUESTIONS?

Is this course suitable for beginners?

This course is intermediate level and designed for jewellers with some experience with making silver jewellery including sawing, filing and soldering.

We recommend taking the Silver Jewellery Workshop and Soldering Masterclass first or already be able to make the projects on these courses.

What is the difference between collet setting and bezel setting?

While they may appear similar, a bezel setting is typically made using bezel strip rather than sheet metal. Bezel strip is generally thinner, and the construction method differs from a collet setting. As a result, the techniques and skills involved in creating a bezel setting are very different from those used for a collet setting.

What tools and materials do I need to make this project?

Here are a list of tools and materials used in this project. We always recommend that you watch the course through before deciding what to order as you will have a good idea of the type of jewellery you would like to make.

What about collet settings for other shaped stones?

Round stones are always where you begin to learn collet setting and it is good to master this style before moving on. We cover other shapes of stones including pear, square and oval in our Diploma in Fine Jewellery. If you are interested in developing your stone setting skills further, do take a look at our Diploma program to see if it’s right for you.
