answers to your questions
What experience do I need before joining the Diploma?
The Diploma is designed to be beginner friendly, so you do not need prior experience to join. We start with the foundations and guide you step by step.
But it does not stay at beginner level for long.
As the months progress, students move into more advanced techniques such as stone setting, sculptural forms, surface treatments, and professional finishing. Skills build gradually, so by the end of the year you are creating pieces with confidence and intention.
Many students join as complete beginners. Others join because they want a dedicated year to deepen their skills and take their work further. Both find themselves growing in ways they did not expect.
It is not about rushing. It is about committing to your development, and seeing what becomes possible when you do.
Materials and tools
A full tools and materials list is provided before ordering, allowing you to check what you already own and what you may need to purchase.
https://www.jewellersacademy.com/diploma-in-silver-metal-clay-tools-and-materials
If you are new to metal clay we do advise that you order the toolkit. It has almost everything you need in it and helps ensure you can just get started on the course.
Our top tip is for everyone, regardless of experience, to order the materials pack for a number of reasons.
It makes it easier to just get started on the projects each week without having to order the materials. The warehouse team cut and bag up all your metals and label them by week so all you have to do is open the bag for the week to get started.
Currently, you can also spread the cost of the materials kits over 18 months.
Tools and Materials order deadline
To spread the cost of the course and materials over 18 months, you must enrol by 13th March 2026. Kits are limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, so early enrolment is recommended.
How do the monthly payments work?
If you choose a payment plan, your first payment is taken on the day you enrol. Monthly payments are then taken on the same date each month.
What support do I get as a student on the course?
You get:
6 x 1-2-1 mentoring sessions over live video. These are spread out over the course of the program.
Fortnightly LIVE Zoom sessions with a course mentor in a small group to get the support you need.
Exclusive access to the Diploma in Silver Metal Clay student Facebook Group to share your weekly progress, ask questions and get feedback. This group opens before the start of the course in September.
Assessment
This is a practical, project-based course. There are no written essays. Assessment is based on your jewellery submissions, with a short written explanation of your inspiration for the final project.
You are required to send your work to us at the end of each term to our warehouse in London, UK. You cover the cost of sending the work to us and we cover the costs for sending it back to you.
Do I need a kiln to complete this course?
Yes, for the projects in this Diploma you will need access to a jewellers kiln. This needs to be a programmable kiln that you can set the temperature. You can find out more about kilns here https://www.jewellersacademy.com/blog/which-kiln-should-i-buy-a-guide-for-jewellers
If you don't have one already, this is a great excuse to get one! You will be using it to fire complex silver clay pieces including rings. You will also use it for enamelling and firing pieces with glass.
We recommend either the Prometheus Mini Kiln 1 or the Paragon SC2
Creative freedom
Each project has clear marking criteria, but within that framework you are encouraged to develop your own designs and creative ideas. Your final project is entirely your own design and is intended to showcase your skills and personal style.
Course pricing
The course fee is £3278 and that is the same wherever you are in the world.
If you add the tools and/or materials pack, there is a difference in pricing which is dependent on your location - international shipping and customs considerations. Full pricing details can be found here https://www.jewellersacademy.com/diploma-in-metal-clay-jewellery-enrolment
