A Clear Path to Learning Silver Jewellery making at Home (Beginner to Intermediate)
If you’ve ever thought “I’d love to try making my own silver jewellery” but you’re not sure where to start, you’re not alone.
One of the biggest challenges for beginners isn’t actually learning the skills - it’s knowing what to learn first. Because there’s lots of inspirational, beautiful jewellery out there but when you don’t know the secret to how it’s made, it’s hard to get started.
If that’s how you feel then this is for you! A step-by-step path to learning silver jewellery making at home, from your very first project through to next level techniques.
Why Learning in the Right Order Matters
It can be tempting to jump straight into more complex jewellery designs - especially when you see beautiful finished pieces online.
But the reality is that most jewellery is built on a small number of core techniques, including:
• Sawing (piercing metal)
• Drilling
• Filing and refining
• Soldering
• Shaping and forming
When you learn these skills in the right order, the process becomes much more straightforward. You grow your confidence faster, avoid frustration and wasting precious materials, and begin creating jewellery you’re proud to wear far sooner.
Step 1: Start with the Basics (Beginner Workshop)
The first step is learning how to work with silver safely and confidently.
The Beginners Silver Jewellery Workshop is designed for complete beginners and focuses on two key projects that introduce all the essential techniques.
the projects
Make a Pierced Silver Pendant
This project teaches you how to transfer a design onto metal and cut it out using a jeweller’s saw.
It’s exciting to be able to take your designs and learn to transfer them into silver. You’ll learn how to control the saw, create shapes, and turn a flat piece of metal into something wearable and beautiful.
2. Make Your First Silver Ring
Next, you’ll create a textured silver ring from scratch.
This is where you’ll learn:
• How to shape and size a ring
• How to texture metal for a unique finish
• The fundamentals of soldering
For many students, this is a turning point. Wearing a ring you’ve made yourself for the first time is so exciting.
By the end of this stage, you’ll have two finished pieces of jewellery and a solid foundation in the skills you’ll use again and again.
Step 2: Build Your Skills (Intermediate Workshop)
Once you’re comfortable with the basics, the next step is to expand what you can create.
The Intermediate Silver Jewellery Workshop builds directly on those foundational skills and introduces techniques that add dimension, movement and precision.
the projects
Make a Spinner Ring
Spinner rings feature a wide band with a thinner outer band that moves freely around it. They are sometimes called a fidget ring because they are so tactile to wear.
In this project, you’ll learn how to:
• Create and size a wide ring band
• Fit a spinning outer band
• Use doming techniques to shape the ring
It’s a brilliant project for developing accuracy and control and the finished piece is both wearable and highly satisfying.
2. Create a Lentil Bead
The second project focuses on forming metal into curved shapes.
You’ll learn how to:
• Create two even domes using doming punches
• Align and refine your pieces
• Solder a hollow form
This introduces a new level of jewellery making, working in three dimensions rather than flat shapes and opens up many creative possibilities.

• Build your confidence step by step
• Develop strong foundational skills that you can build on

Many students who follow this path go on to explore further training or even start their own jewellery businesses.
