How to Grow Your Jewellery Business (and Know What to Focus on Next)

Starting a jewellery business is exciting. You get to turn your creativity into something that other people can enjoy, wear and treasure. There's nothing quite like the feeling of making your first sale and knowing that someone loves your jewellery enough to buy it!

But once you've started selling your jewellery, it can lead to a whole new set of questions.

How do you find more customers? How can you make sales more consistently? Should you be posting more on Instagram, improving your website, developing new jewellery collections or spending time on your photography?

And how do you know which of these things will actually make a difference?

If you've been running your jewellery business for a while, you might recognise this feeling. You're working hard, juggling lots of different tasks and doing your best to build something successful, but you're not always sure where to focus your attention.

The good news is that growing your jewellery business doesn't have to mean doing more of everything. It's about understanding what your business needs at its current stage and making decisions that will help it move forward.

Being a great jeweller and running a great jewellery business are different skills

You can make beautiful jewellery and still find the business side challenging. That's because making jewellery is only one part of running a successful jewellery business.

You also need to help people discover your work, understand what makes it special and feel confident buying from you. You need to know how to price your pieces profitably, how to market your collections and how to develop relationships with your customers.

The great news is that these are all skills you can learn. In fact, one of the most valuable things you can do as a jewellery business owner is to understand that developing your own business knowledge is just as important as developing your jewellery-making skills.

You don't need to know everything from the beginning, but you do need to keep learning as your business grows.

Sometimes it's the small things that make the biggest difference

When we think about business growth, it's tempting to focus on big changes.

Maybe you need a completely new website, a different product range or thousands more followers on social media?

But sometimes the things holding your business back are actually much smaller.

For example, imagine someone discovers a beautiful pair of earrings on your Instagram account. They love them and would happily buy them, but they can't find a link to your website or any information about how to order. If you’re lucky, they might send you a message to ask, but they might just move on.

Or perhaps you're regularly sharing photographs of your jewellery but rarely telling the stories behind your designs, explaining your inspiration or helping customers understand why your work is special. Just a few thoughtful changes to the way you communicate with your customers could make a real difference.

Before assuming you need more customers, it's worth asking whether you're making it as easy as possible for the customers you already reach to buy from you.

Your business needs direction, not just activity

When you're running a small business, there's always something that needs doing. You could spend every day creating social media content, updating your website, designing jewellery, answering enquiries and researching new ideas. It's easy to fill your time with business tasks without necessarily moving your business closer to your goals.

That's why having a clear vision for your jewellery business is so important.

What would you actually like your business to look like in a year's time?

Would you like to increase your sales? Build a loyal customer base? Start selling through shops and galleries? Earn enough to reduce the hours you work elsewhere? Or perhaps make your existing business more profitable without having to work more hours?

Your answers will help determine where you should focus your energy.

Not every business needs the same things at the same time. The most useful next step for one jewellery maker might be improving their product photography, while another might benefit from focusing on email marketing, pricing or launching a new collection.

The key is knowing what to prioritise.

You need to grow alongside your business

There's another important part of business growth that we sometimes overlook: you!

As your jewellery business develops, your role as a business owner changes too.

You may need to become more confident talking about your work, improve your financial knowledge, learn new marketing skills or get more comfortable selling.

As your business gets busier, you might also need to think about managing your time differently or getting help with some of the tasks you've always done yourself.

Investing in your own learning and development can have a huge impact on what your business is able to achieve.

And remember, you don't have to work everything out on your own.

Learning from people with experience, getting support and having access to a community of other jewellery business owners can help you make decisions with greater confidence.
